As we continue to look back on 50 years of Quality Glass Block, we’re revisiting the pivotal moments, bold decisions, and forward-thinking strategies that helped shape the company into what it is today. Throughout our history, growth has often come from recognizing opportunities before others did and having the confidence to invest in the future. One of the most significant examples of that mindset came in 2011, when a major decision transformed not only the company, but also helped change the glass block industry itself.
Following Opportunity
Growth has always been part of Quality Glass Block’s story.
Years earlier, Ray Sr. recognized an important business principle: you have to go where the people are going. That mindset helped guide many of the company’s decisions over the years and encouraged a willingness to explore new opportunities rather than staying comfortable with what had always worked.
By 2011, the market was changing. While Quality Glass Block had built a strong reputation throughout the Midwest, Ray saw potential beyond the company’s traditional service areas. He believed there were opportunities in other states and other markets that the company simply couldn’t reach through a local presence alone.
The challenge was figuring out how to connect with customers hundreds or even thousands of miles away.
The answer wasn’t opening new locations. It was embracing something that very few businesses in the glass block industry were doing at the time: building a comprehensive online platform.
A Major Investment
Today, having a strong website is considered standard business practice. In 2011, however, that wasn’t necessarily true, especially in a niche industry like glass block.
Building an online platform capable of serving customers nationwide required a significant investment. The company committed approximately $100,000 to develop a website that would not only showcase products and services but also create opportunities to connect with customers across the country.
It was a substantial financial commitment, but Ray believed it would pay off.
At the time, there was no roadmap showing exactly how successful the strategy would be. There were no guarantees. What there was, however, was confidence that the future of business would increasingly happen online.
That confidence proved to be well-founded.
Surpassing Industry Leaders
When the new website launched, the impact was immediate.
In a surprising and exciting development, Quality Glass Block’s website quickly surpassed Pittsburgh Corning, the largest and most recognized name in the glass block industry at the time, in website rankings.
For a family-owned company, it was a remarkable achievement.
More importantly, it demonstrated that customers were actively searching online for glass block products, installation services, and information. Quality Glass Block had positioned itself to meet that demand before most of the industry even realized the opportunity existed.
The company’s investment wasn’t just helping generate business, it was changing expectations within the glass block industry itself.

Changing the Industry
As competitors began noticing Quality Glass Block’s online success, many realized they needed to develop their own digital presence.
The problem was that they were already behind.
By the time other companies started building comparable websites and online platforms, Quality Glass Block had established a significant head start, roughly nine to ten months ahead of competitors trying to catch up.
In the rapidly evolving digital landscape, that advantage was enormous.
The company had already built online visibility, created valuable content, established customer trust, and positioned itself as a leader in online glass block sales and information.
What started as a strategic investment became a competitive advantage that helped shape the future of the business.
Looking Ahead While Honoring the Past
As we celebrate 50 years of Quality Glass Block, stories like this remind us that success often comes from a willingness to embrace change while staying true to your core values.
From Ray Sr.’s belief in following opportunity to Ray’s vision for expanding online, the company has consistently looked ahead to what comes next.
The 2011 website investment wasn’t just about technology. It was about reaching more customers, growing the business, and ensuring Quality Glass Block would continue serving homeowners, contractors, and businesses for decades to come.
Fifty years later, that forward-thinking mindset remains a key part of who we are—and it’s helping guide us toward the next chapter of the Quality Glass Block story.
