As we continue our 50-year celebration of Quality Glass Block, this month we’re looking back at the remarkable early days under the leadership of Ray Sr. His vision, determination, and innovative spirit laid the foundation for the thriving company we are today.
Building a Strong Foundation for Growth
One of Ray Sr.’s biggest accomplishments was positioning the company for long-term growth. Originally operating in downtown Chicago, he saw the potential in the suburbs and made the bold move to relocate. This strategic decision not only provided more space for operations but also set the stage for 30 years of expansion.
Ray Sr. also played a pivotal role in bringing Quality Glass Block into the commercial sector. Partnering with Weck Glass Block, a German company based in Bond, he helped introduce high-quality glass blocks to the U.S. market. By working closely with Weck, Ray Sr. was able to secure the exact products needed to compete with industry leaders like Pittsburgh Corning. His efforts not only helped establish the company but also put Weck on the map — a legacy that continued even after Weck was acquired by Seves.
Landmark Projects That Shaped the Company
Ray Sr.’s early years were filled with projects that showcased both technical skill and creative vision. Two in particular stand out:
- Carl Sandburg High School – For this job, Ray Sr. oversaw the installation of curved glass block walls surrounding the school’s pool. The project required over 10,000 individual blocks, demonstrating both precision and craftsmanship.
- RTC Factory Installation – Another challenging project involved installing massive glass block windows on the second floor of a factory. Each window measured 16 feet wide by 8 or 9 feet tall, a scale that was rare at the time and required innovative installation techniques.
These projects weren’t just about size — they were about pushing the boundaries of what could be done with glass block, setting the standard for quality and design that continues to define the company.
Here are a few other photos of some really cool early installation projects.

Looking Back to Look Forward
Ray Sr.’s early achievements remind us of the power of vision, perseverance, and craftsmanship. His leadership not only helped establish Quality Glass Block as a commercial force but also set a tone of excellence that continues to inspire every project we take on today.
Stay tuned for next month’s blog post as we continue celebrating 50 years of innovation, quality, and the people who made it all possible.
